Mere School Curriculum Statement

At Mere School we believe all our children have the right to succeed, to have high aspirations for their future lives and develop who they are in a respectful and caring environment. Our school ethos is firmly rooted in our school vision -

We enjoy- we learn - we achieve'.

At Mere, we provide the children with a rich and stimulating art curriculum. Our high quality teaching of art and design engages, inspires and challenges all children; giving pupils the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own pieces of art. We are proud to have been awarded ARTS MARK GOLD in recognition of our commitment to art at Mere School.

The school is well resourced and provides the children with quality media to enable them to produce work to a high standard. The start to all of the children’s creative journey begins through the use of sketch books. The children are taught to observe, draw and record their ideas using a variety of medias. They are given the opportunity to draw, paint and experiment lots of ideas on paper and are expected to comment on their work and the work of other artists. Children are also provided time to explore lots of other medias including wire, printing, textile work, collage and 3D media. The school is incredibly lucky to have a kiln on sight so all children have the opportunity to work with real clay that can be fired and glazed.

Art at Mere School promotes resilience and gives the children the chance to have a go and understand that it is okay to make mistakes along their journey.
